Fire Destroys Elmers

Elmer’s Texas Barbecue, a popular dining establishment north of Battle Lake and near Otter Tail Lake, was destroyed by fire in the early-morning hours of Friday, September 1.
“Nobody was injured and the state fire marshal is on the scene” said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke at mid-morning September 1.
He said the owner of the restaurant, Rodger Heaton, lived in the basement of the restaurant and was awakened by a loud noise at 2:35 a.m.
“Mr. Heaton saw smoke that was all around as he made his way out of the building” said Van Dyke.
Responding to the fire were members of fire departments from Battle Lake, Henning and Ottertail.
An investigation as to the cause of the fire was ongoing.
During the past few summers there were dinner theater shows conducted at Betty Jo’s Pavilion next door to Elmer’s Texas Barbecue. This was a joint effort by Elmer’s and a theater troupe.
There was no immediate word on whether or not the owner plans to rebuild the establishment along Highway 78. Photos by Richard Hochstein
