Kathryn Dean Elmer graduated from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Basic Officer Training Friday, November 17 in New London, CT. Ensign Elmer was recognized as the Sea Service Leadership Association Distinguished Honor Graduate. Additional awards included the Association of Commissioned Officers Professional Mariner Award and the Officer’s Family Association Academic Award. Her first assignment is NOAA Ship Fairweather, a hydrographic research vessel homeported in Ketchikan, AK. Kathryn is the daughter of Wayne and Kimberly Elmer; and the granddaughter of Elaine Elmer and the late Col. Dean Elmer, USAF (retired). NOAA Corps is one of eight federal uniformed services of the United States and is made up of scientifically and technically trained officers. NOAA Corps’ primary mission is to monitor oceanic conditions, support major waterways, and monitor atmospheric conditions.
