Ellen Johnson – Battle Lake, MN

Ellen Johnson, age 101, of Battle Lake passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Good Samaritan Society, Battle Lake. She was born November 13, 1922 to Tomas and Louise (Larson) Haukebo at their rural Underwood home. Ellen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in District 270 (the little red school house). She graduated from Battle Lake High School. December 25, 1942 she married Ivan Johnson of Fergus Falls at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. They lived in Fergus Falls for some time, farmed for a number of years and then moved back to Fergus. She worked at Carpenter Hardware for many years and Brown Hardware before moving to their new home on Asthre Drive in rural Battle Lake. Ellen enjoyed music, singing in the church choir for many years, being part of “Shepards of Love” (a ladies singing group), was active in her church circle, Good Samaritan Auxiliary and Everts Birthday Club. She enjoyed her family, cooking and baking and was known for her homemade donuts. Her family enjoyed many meals of meatballs and gravy which she was also known for. She also enjoyed utilizing her green thumb on her plants and flowers and had many animal companions throughout the years. She is survived by her son, Richard (Judi) Johnson of Campbellsport, WI; daughter, LaVon Madsen of Strausburg, VA; grandchildren, Jamie Johnson, Jeremie Johnson, Crystal (T) Brown, Jasson (Amy) Johnson, Dane (Cathy Ann) Madsen, Kirk (Kathleen) Madsen, Naomi (Doug) Zweig; great-grandchildren, Tony and Abbigayle Brown, Izak Johnson, Charlotte Madsen, Emmanuel, Isaiah and Kaia Zweig; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Ellen is preceded in death by her husband, Ivan; parents, Tomas and Louise; daughters, Louise (Terry) Couillard and Linda Johnson; great-granddaughter, Bridget Louise Madsen; her sister, Signe (Mike) Jorgensen; brothers, Arnie (Hilma), Ellis, Clarence, Walter (Doris), Tom (Tyne), Herb (Olive), Rudy and Tom’s infant twin brother; along with other family and friends. Her family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Society who provided care for Ellen for the past year and those at Knute Nelson Hospice, as well as those in the Battle Lake community that visited with her and loved her. Visit is Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. with a service to follow at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Battle Lake. Burial will take place Monday June 3 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Ellen would like donations to Rindal Cemetery in Underwood and Battle Lake First Responders.
