Daryl K. “Redman” Burhans, age 67, of Alexandria, formerly of Farmington, passed away Monday, Dec-ember 8, 2025 at his home after battling cancer for five years. A celebration of life service will be 3 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2025 at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria with Rev. Greg Billberg officiating. Private family interment will take place at First Lutheran Cemetery in Battle Lake. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Daryl Kurt was born Oct-ober 4, 1958 to Dorothy (Gaarsland) Burhans and Floyd Burhans in Watertown, WI. When he was in first grade, the family moved to Battle Lake, where Daryl graduated from high school in 1976. Following graduation, Daryl attended the University of Wisconsin–River Falls for one year. During summer break, while home in Battle Lake, he met the love of his life, Donna Walvatne. He return-ed to school that fall but remained unsure of his career path, so he moved back to Minnesota, settled in Alexandria and began working at Drymor. (Donna always said it was because he missed her and didn’t want to be so far away.) Daryl and Donna were united in marriage August 16, 1980 in Dalton. Their first son, Josh was born in Alexandria. After Drymor closed, Daryl chose to further his education at Alexandria Technical College, where he earned a degree in Avionics in 1985. After graduation, he accepted a position with Republic Airlines in Detroit, MI. While living in Detroit, Daryl and Donna welcomed their second son, Jake. Following the merger of Republic and Northwest Airlines, the family returned to Minnesota after one year and made their home in Farmington. Daryl worked for Northwest Airlines for 20 years, until mechanics were forced out in 2005. He then transitioned from aviation to a position with Dow Chemical, where he worked for five years. Because he always missed working on airplanes, Daryl was thrilled to be hired by Delta Airlines in 2011, where he remained until his retirement in 2022. After retiring, Daryl and Donna returned to Alexandria. Many friends knew Daryl as “Red” while Donna lovingly called him “her main man Redman”. Daryl enjoyed traveling, grouse hunting and 4-wheeling up north, golfing, boating, volleyball and more recently pickleball, and woodworking. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his favorite Minnesota teams, the Vikings, Wild and Gophers. Daryl was exceptionally proud of his sons, and of the husbands and fathers they had become. He loved attending all their sporting events when they were young and was now enjoying watching his grandchildren. Though a man of few words, his children and grandchildren were very special to him. He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd; brother, Wesley; maternal grandmother, Edna (Gaarsland) Moen; and parents-in-law, Ernest and Maine Walvatne. Daryl is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna; sons, Joshua (Carly) Burhans of Edina and Jacob (Marissa) Burhans of Eagan; five grandchildren, Crosby, Baylor and Lennon of Edina, Winnie and Watson of Eagan; mother, Dorothy Burhans of Battle Lake; four sisters, Elizabeth Burhans, Jeanette (Rick) Jensen, Suzann (Paul) Svingen and Nancy (Dean) Seidel; along with many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Alexandria Oncology Doctors and Nurses, and Hospice of Douglas County.
