Joan passed away peacefully in her sleep at the grand young age of 92, Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Joan was born August 19, 1933 in Fergus Falls, MN to Harry and Esther Wallin. She was raised in the town of Battle Lake, MN and continued her education at the University of Minnesota, first in Duluth and finishing her degree in Minneapolis. She transferred to the Minneapolis Campus after meeting the love of her life, Matthew W. Macheledt Jr. at the drive-in in Battle Lake where she worked summers.
After she graduated from college she and Matthew married and started their life together. Matthew became a military officer and they traveled the world together going from post to post, both in the US and overseas in Germany and Thailand. During this time they raised three boys.
When they retired from the military, she became a teacher in the White Bear Lake School District teaching English to the middle school grades while completing her Master’s Degree.
In 1999 they fully retired and spent the next 23 years traveling the world, enjoying opera, orchestra and theatre, splitting time between Battle Lake, White Bear Lake and Dragoon, AZ; and most importantly being with family and friends.
Joan was preceeded in death by her husband, Matthew (2023); Su Macheledt, wife of Matthew Macheledt III; as well as her sister, Karen Holdt, who she cherished and her husband, Bruce.
She is survived by her three boys, Matthew Mach-eledt III, Tim (Julie) Mach-eledt and Peter (Joni) Mach-eledt; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
